How to get rid of a woodworm infestation

Once you find out that you have a pest in your home, you must act as quickly as possible. Some of these animals can really hurt you, or your furniture. The latter, becoming one of the most dangerous ones since this can affect the structure of your home.

If you have found out that your house is filled with these insects, the best thing to do is to get rid of them as soon as possible before further damage is done to your home or furniture. We’ll give you some tips on how to get rid of a woodworm infestation.

How to get rid of a woodworm infestation

When it comes to an infestation, you need to make sure you know the place where the woodworm is. Generally, they are going to be in places where humidity is high and there is a food source, in this case, wood. Furniture are one of the main targets of these insects. There are a few steps to get rid of them while they are in the furniture.

First, an inspection of your furniture must be made. Make sure you look for holes around the wood, as this is the perfect hiding spot for woodworms. If you hear a cracking sound, this might indicate that too. With this inspection, you can also assess if the furniture can be saved, remember that some woodworms might have been eating the superficial layers and not got deep, but if you notice that the furniture is weak, there is no turning back and you better dispose of it.

If it is good enough to be saved, then you can buy a commercial treatment that works on every type of woodworm, remember that when you are working with chemicals you need to wear a mask, or it will make you feel terrible, and it is dangerous for your health. It is always recommended not to do it and you better call a professional that can help you with that. If you are willing to go with the treatment yourself, then spray the product in the area that is being affected by the woodworm and wait for it to dry. Recoat the surface that was damaged, and you’ll gain your furniture back.

Furthermore, there are different types of woodworm that can affect the treatment that is applied to your furniture or home. If the damage is only made in the surface, you can get rid of them with a brush, spray (Permethrin based as this kills the eggs, larvae, and the beetle), or a dip.

When you are dealing with the Death Watch Beetle, a treatment done to the surface won’t suffice, as they generally do more damage than the normal ones. The treatment for this type of woodworm goes as far as injecting the spray in the wood. It is advised not to deal with this insect without professional help as you might hurt your property more.

When a treatment has been done, you need to check the furniture. It is better to have a professional check the timber that has been affected and let them tell you if you need to find a replacement for it.
