How to keep mice out of shed

Mice are pests that really like to be near humans. They unconsciously provide food and water supply for this animal at home, and this is when they start becoming an issue. Most of them see opportunities of survival in a house, especially dark places where there are materials that can be gnawed and chewed on. Sheds are particularly one of the best places for them to hide and breed.

Generally, sheds are dark, have numerous materials inside which include wood, and can be accessed through easily. Some of them have water supply and this contributes to the growth of these rodents. They don’t need much of anything to be able to survive or breed.

If they have taken a hold of your shed, you need to make sure they stay away, as having them home is very detrimental for one’s health. Here we’ll talk about different ways to keep them out of your shed.

Cutting away their food and water supply

Basic needs that mice have is water and food. Remember that those rodents can eat basically anything that they can find on their way, so it is easy to have them stay in your shed. If there is any cardboard there, remove it because they will build a nest with it and feed off it. Moreover, any rubbish left there must be sealed up or cleaned up right away, as food is one of the main reasons for them to infest a place.

Do not keep gardening material inside your shed if you don’t want a mice infestation. Mice are omnivores, which means they feed off seeds, fruits, and things related to that, so having those things inside can make your shed a mouse hole.

Use natural scents to scare them off

Mice are rodents with a keen sense of smell. They are very curious and like to go around everything. One thing that can scare them off is to have some natural scents that act as deterrents and make mice go away. There are several ones like chilli powder, peppermint oil, or spices that tend to be irritating for them. The way to have the best results is to soak some cotton balls and put them near places you know mice are lurking around, this will make sure they go away fast and without having to do something extreme.

Seal off any entries you may have

Mice are minimal, and they tend to fit in every crack and hole they see. Every so often, they are going to try to make it bigger, so they can fit and find some food. If your shed is made of wood, try to check all the cracks this may have and seal them off using some cement, glue or any material that can’t be gnawed. Iron plates are great as they’re hard enough for them.

Do not forget to look at every gap, there might be spaces near windows where these animals can get in. Once you have done this, you’ll be making it difficult for rodents to come inside, and they’ll prefer to find a place in other space where they can eat and go inside more easily.

Get a pet

This is one of the easiest ways to get rid of mice, or just keep them away from your shed. Having a cat is a natural deterrent of these animals since they’re their natural predators and once they find the smell of one of them around, they will stop hence avoiding them from enter as they believe that these places are dangerous for them to be in and won’t go near them at any point given.

Clean common spaces

First things first, if your shed is full of dirt or other things, mice can take advantage of the mess and come inside. If you clean and organize everything, it is difficult for them to wander around. Remember that inside a shed you can find many things as tools, wood, gardening material, etc., which can influence a mouse into getting there as those places are dark and humans don’t spend a lot of time there. Cleaning and removing all the dirt is going to make it less appealing for a mouse to move in, hence feeling a little safer.

Make use of traps or glue

Once mice have infested the shed, there is nothing much to do but try to remove them as fast as possible. Using humane traps, you can do that. Other kind of traps that are more harmful are glue traps, which can even become deadly.
