Types of Ants UK

One of the most common insects that you can find around the world are ants. These little animals can be seen in the garden, in your house, under a rock, and many other different places. If you really look at them carefully, you might find out that all of them are different.

There are many species of these animals in the UK. We are going to talk about the most important and common ones.

Garden Ant (Lasius Niger)

Across Europe, you can find many animals, and this one seems to be all around the UK too. This type of ant usually can be found in the garden as a colony. They can become huge in numbers having up to 40 000 worker ants, even though it is a rare case as 7000 workers is the normal found in colonies.

One of the characteristics that this type of ant has is that they are friendly in terms of diseases since it does not transmit any health-endangering diseases. They can become into a nuance if their numbers are big enough, nonetheless.

In terms of their size, they are exceedingly small, going from 3 mm to 5 mm in adult ants, even though the queen can be 2 or 3 times bigger than a normal one. It can get to almost 12 mm.

As a pest, they can be seen in kitchens, cupboards and in corners of the kitchen looking for food for them to feed. Furthermore, this type of ant UK has a fascination for rubbish since it can find leftovers there too.

You dog or cat’s waste can also attract them, so you better get rid of it as soon as possible without leaving any trace.

If you do not want this type of pest going around your house, you can call a professional, so they can fumigate and exterminate them.

Pavement Ant (It is also known as Sugar ant)

Their behaviour is a bit different from other ants. They tend to attack them when they are exploring new territories to expand their current population. As they are called pavement ants, most of these fights tend to be in public since they live in those places. It is not an unusual sight seeing dead ants on the floor.

They do not tend to be that big, usually between 2,5 to 4 mm. Some of them might have wings and are able to fly, but these are not workers but alates, being as twice as big. An ant can sting a person but nothing grave will happen, only the hurt of the sting.

During hot times they dig through the pavement sand as they need to provide fresh air for the colony. You can see little holes in the streets where they have dug for making ventilation for the nest.

Black Ants

Even though they seem to be similar to the garden ants, they vary a little. First, this type of ant UK can be found in different parts, such as northern England, Ireland, and in the lowlands too.

Their main distinguishing feature is the fact that their legs are yellowish, being different from garden ants. Furthermore, their size is bigger.

In terms of behaviour, they make their nests in places like rotten trees or under rocks and boulders. Not only that, but they seem to like hedgerows, it is not too rare to see a nest lined with some of these shrubs.

Hairy Wood Ant

Normally, ants get food from different sources like rubbish and leftovers, but these animals are impressive as they are carnivores. Eating certain animals that live near their colonies is a normal part of their diet. They are commonly found in forests spread out in the United Kingdom.

One of their distinctive features is the hair that grows down in the direction of their eyes. Not only that, but they are bigger than common ants. Moreover, their way of living differs as they have not only one queen but many in their colony.

It can be much bigger than normal ones. They can reach almost half a million workers that are established in a dome-shaped nest with an incredible size. One unique characteristic is that they emit a certain odour that they recognize, but when another ant or animal comes into their nest, they know immediately.

Formica Ligniperda (Carpenter ants)

These ants are all around the UK. This type of ant UK can be found in places where a wooden construction is taking place, not only on the outside but in the inside too. They have a fascination for these places, a thing that is profoundly serious since their nests are established inside buildings, causing structural damage that can compromise it.

Their eating habits are fairly similar to the hairy wood ant as they also eat animals, but generally dead insects that can eat fast. Another thing in their diet is honeydew, and nectar that comes from plants. As part of their diet, they eat different types of sugary food like honey and different fruits. These can be dangerous as you might lure them into your house when you do not protect your food and rubbish.

If you do not want them in your house, try to search the premises for dead insects as they are part of these animals’ diet. They are more active at night, so it is good if you do the search at that time since it is easier to find them.

Fire Ant (European)

The sting of Solenopsis invicta, the Red Imported Fire Ant, is well known to many in the southern United States, but immunotherapy is possible.

This particular type of ant in the UK has similarities with other species with the same name, but it is based here. They like living under fallen trees, rocks or boulders and soil that gives them the nutrients they need for survival.

They live in big nests with multiple queens that take care of the workers. Whenever there is a death in the colony, they take them to a safe distance from the nest.

Pharaoh ants

The Pharaoh species is very common worldwide, and the UK is not the exception. This ant lives in polygynous colonies, meaning that there are multiple queens, so the colony can divide itself into smaller colonies. This species is notorious in hospitals and generally, in indoors. Pharaoh ants are light brown, almost transparent coloured.
