Types of British mice

When you have your own house, you have to take care of many things, specially taking care of the grounds, furniture and all the expenses that come with it. It is known, however, that many of those expenses are not the only ones you have to carry because when pests knock on your door there is more money to spend.

Mice are the most common pest you can find. They are scattered around the UK. And it is not only their location, but the different type of British mice that exist. It is good to know how to identify them and the behaviour that they have for you to catch them quickly or tell a pest control expert, so they can act and have the best solution for that problem.

House Mouse

When you have seen or heard about a mouse being in a house then it might have been a house mouse. These tend to live closer to us and can appear in our house without notice. In terms of appearance, you can see that it is a brown-grey mouse, it is covered with these colours all over its body. As a regular mouse they have big eyes, ears and their snout is pointy.

Humans think that these animals favour cheese, but this might not be true. In fact, these types of animals prefer cereals. Leaving oats, rice and other things can make them appear. It is funny how different types of British mice exist, and you are only used to the house one.

Its behaviour is the same as other mice. It is very curious and likes to investigate. They come at night so those are their active hours. If you want to trap one you need to put it right in the middle of its path since its curious nature is going to make it take the bait.

If you want to know if you have got these animals inside, they emit a strong smell which you can use to pinpoint their location, and you can use that to call an expert that checks your house and identifies an infestation.

Harvest Mouse

This animal is found in both Europe as in Asia. You can find it in different parts of Wales and from Yorkshire to southern parts of England. It resembles the house mouse but has a quality that those do not possess.

These creatures are able to use their tail as a fifth limb, making it very dangerous and skilled. As a rodent, it has big eyes and ears but its colour differs from the house mouse being its fur brownish or yellowish. Its fur is very long and covers the whole body.

Their living area changes according to the season. Usually, their normal habitats are hedgerows, areas where the vegetation is dense, cornfields and areas they are not disturbed. Their danger to crops is big since in their diet they usually include seeds, wheat, oats, nectar and fruits, although insects are rather included and also fungi.

Their behaviour is similar to other types of British mice, but they have a big difference. They are active not only at night but during the day too. Furthermore, they do not go into any state of hibernation. However, in winter they seem to spend their time underground.

Field Mouse

This time of mice is called field mouse or wood mouse. They can be found all over the UK, in fact, they are the most common type of mouse that lives in Britain. Its appearance is different from other types of mice. It has brown fur, almost sandy, and its belly is white coloured. It is tiny compared to other species, and it has smaller ears but a long tail that is almost as big as their body.

Their habitat is very similar to the harvest mouse as they are found in fields, gardens and hedgerows too, they prefer to be in underground burrows as deep in the roots of trees which have tunnels and chambers where they can nest without being disturbed. Although, they will live in any place where they are sorted with shelter and lots of food.

These little animals have a very varied diet. They go from eating seeds to berries and even larvae of small insects. Not only that, but they will eat worms and carcasses as part of it.

They tend to be active at night. They can climb very well and can leap in the air if it is being disturbed by an animal or a human. A characteristic of this animal is also their excellent vision and hearing as other types of British mice.

Yellow-necked mouse

A rodent that looks quite similar to the wood mouse, but it is different as you can distinguish it by a collar of yellowish fur that they have around their neck but is quite difficult to catch at plain sight. Furthermore, their ears are a bit larger and their body too.

They are found near the Welsh borders and in southern areas. Although, it is not only found in Britain but in Europe and Asia.

Similar to the field mouse they tend to build their nests underground near stumps or roots from trees. They can be seen in wooden gardens, woodlands, or hedgerows. If you talk about their diet it seems to follow the same pattern as with field mice. They are omnivore so their diet goes from seeds and nuts to insects and spiders.

Their behaviour resembles to their familiar species as they are active at night, and they can climb high trees for them to flee or to find food as in houses.

There are many types of British mice so if your house is being infested try to check which one it is or just call the professionals that can help you with that matter.

How to tell the difference between mice and rats

Pests appear everywhere. Sometimes people think that living in a closed space or in a city they can escape from them, but that’s not true. If in your house, you see a rodent you might think it’s a rat. But, what if it’s a mouse? Have you wondered what’s the difference between mice and rats?

You might think it’s not important, however, taking care of them can be different even though they share similarities and behaviour. You need to learn if your home is infested by one or another so you can be more accurate and that might help you, or the professionals you hire, to get rid of them.

Appearance

When you see a mouse or a rat you might think they’re the same, but they’re not. First, mice are smaller than rats. Their body is small, and it can’t be longer than 10 cm. Rats can go beyond this limit. Their ears are slightly larger, and their tail is a bit longer. They can be easily confused as young rats are almost identical to adult mice. Also, mice have a triangular snout and rats have a blunter one.

Eating habits

Although both are omnivorous, they have a slightly different diet since they prefer different kind of food. There are black and brown rats. They’re both from the same species but their physical appearance is different. With this said, you can tell the difference between mice and rats according to their diet. Brown rats and house mice prefer to eat cereals; however, black rats prefer fruits and other kind of food that have moisture in high quantities.

Also, a big difference is that mice don’t need water. They can drink up to 3ml if water is available, but it isn’t necessary for them. Brown rats drink a lot of water, nearly double the quantity drunk by black rats.

Another thing that has to be taken into account is that mice and brown rats tend to eat from the same place, they usually seek food in the same places which is bad for them because humans can trap them easily by setting some traps after they have been tracked. Black rats are different and eat from any place they can find so it’s harder to control them hence being more difficult to trace and trap.

Different nesting places

Mice, black rats, and brown rates differ in terms of housing. Mice often live in burrows and on the ground, but be careful, since they can climb and run very fast. While mice live on the ground, black rats refer ships, buildings that are located near ports. Since they’re very agile, they can climb up to treetops or under roofs and start building nests there. They’re called “ship rats”. Now you know where black rats and mice live, but what about brown rats? That’s an easy question to answer if you know how to tell the difference between mice and rats. Brown rats have a similar nesting location as mice, on the ground and burrows. Usually, they tend to go down the sewers, damaging them while building their nesting place.

Look out for some droppings

Droppings for each kind of animal are different. They can vary in terms of size and shape, leaving you a reference in order to know if you’re being infested by an animal in particular. Brown rats leave droppings like a grain of rice, but they’re black coloured and a bit wide. On the other hand, black rats’ droppings are a little bit smaller than brown rat ones. This time, they’re shaped like a banana with pointy ends. Mice droppings are the smallest of them all, and they tend to leave them near their nesting areas.

They move in different ways

Mice have different characteristics and abilities. For instance, they can run very fast, allowing them even to climb through vertical surfaces, having a great advantage against humans. And not only that, but they’re also incredible swimmers and jumpers, reaching up to 30 centimetres high. Also, they can walk on wires, ropes and cables.

Like mice, black and brown rats are very good swimmers, that’s why they’re usually near sewers and stay inside toilets and drains until they have to get food, so they climb up.

Breeding cycle

As they’re different species, their breeding cycle is also different as mice reach sexual maturity earlier than rats. Not only that, their litters tend to be larger than rats since they have at least 7 litters per year, almost doubling rats. Do you know how to tell the difference between mice and rats when they’re new borne? Well, it’s complicated since they’re almost identical.

Their behaviour also changes

There are two adjectives that describe rats and mice perfectly. Mice are curious and rats are very cautious. In fact, you can play with that in order for you to catch them or get rid of them quickly. Mice are always looking and trying to figure out things and get used to them so they can move on and continue with their routine. For this reason, setting up a trap on their way is an easy solution since they’re going to investigate it and then get caught.

Rats are cautious, so they’re not as easy to capture as mice. They try to avoid new things they find, so the best wait to catch them is to put some unset traps on their way so they avoid them and then set traps so they don’t have a choice.

These are the differences that exist between these animals. As always, find a professional first since they’re the ones with the knowledge and experience to help you in any case of infestation.

What to do about cockroach eggs in your home?

You can find different pests around the world, but one of the most common is cockroaches. These insects are disgusting, they bring so many diseases to your home and have a bad smell when they’re concentrated in one space.

Not only do they bring disease, but they are insects, and they reproduce quickly by leaving their eggs in certain places so they can continue growing in population. Today you’ll learn about how to take care of cockroach eggs and removing them from your house so you don’t have to deal with adults.

Female cockroaches

If we want to know about eggs, we need to talk about the female cockroaches first. There are certain areas in your home that may be affected by these creatures. They love warm and humid areas, so it’s natural that they like to lay their eggs in the bathroom or the kitchen.

This egg is not a normal egg but a capsule that has lots of young cockroaches inside. It is not that big, almost 10 mm long and light brown coloured. These capsule is produced by the female cockroach every few weeks, carrying it before it hatches, trying to see where it can be introduced (any crack or crevice) once the hatching starts to happen.

The thing for these animals to become a large population in such a short period of time is that the birth cycle is ongoing, so they can continue coming and coming out reaching a large infestation in a short period of time.

Where to find cockroach eggs?

If you want to stop the infestation the first step is getting rid of the mother, but you also need to know where they put them so in advance you know the place to find them and kill them.

The sight of a roach might be a sign of an early infestation, so try to keep track of where you saw it so you can find the eggs that have been laid. First of all, check in rubbish cans or recycling bins since they’re dark and may attract roaches. Also, pantries where food is stored can be one of their best food supplies so they can be found there. Don’t forget to check drawers, places where you eat or leave crumbs as you attract them.

Why do I have to get rid of them?

Firstly, as we said before, cockroaches are very dangerous, and they can bring several diseases. Their eggs can do that too. Some of them can even trigger any allergies you might have. You could get cough, skin rashes, nasal congestion and some others.

How can you eliminate them?

Remember that cockroaches are everywhere and you may need to inspect your house so you see them. If you want to eliminate them, first you should call a professional since they’re experts in the matter and they’ll help you exterminate all of them and they’re eggs because it doesn’t matter if you eliminate the adults completely, as there might be many of these scattered around the house waiting to hatch.

Get rid of their mother

As we said before, the best way to get rid of the eggs is eliminating their mother. You need to go around your house looking for a potential nest where cockroach eggs might be. Also, you can leave some food crumbs near where you think it is and check it regularly so you’re sure they’ve eaten some.

This way, you’ll check if they are active. You could buy some bait, they’re usually sold on Amazon or other different stores. Place them where they feed and then you’ll get rid of it. They aren’t poisonous for humans but it’s best if professionals do this.

Bug spray

There are certain bug sprays that may leave roaches sterile, so they can’t make the capsule and you’ll get rid of the problem fast. Although, if you’ve already found some egg capsules this isn’t going to help as what they do is make eggs unviable. For this case, there’s another bug spray that can help you, they have a non-toxic substance that dehydrates the eggs, and with that, killing what’s inside them.

Vacuum your floors

This is a good way to eliminate nymphs and eggs. In contrast to the bug spray, there can be other animals lurking around that weren’t affected by it and you have to counter attack. Try to star vacuuming in places you’ve sprayed as to clean everything up. Remember, cockroach eggs can stay in the bag and survive, so try to put it in the freezer because cold is one of the best ways to kill them.

Throw away any hiding spot

Sometimes cockroaches get inside places or things we’ve accumulated during the years. Many of them can be disposed, so you’d better look in any old box, newspapers you have or things you have stored as cockroaches like dark places too. This is a very good complement to vacuuming.

Other measures to take

In order your house not to get infested by these things you should follow different recommendations. One thing that is very important is getting rid of any food crumbs or rubbish you have at home since they are attracted to it.

Use your dishwasher to keep everything tidy, including cups and kitchen utensils so no cockroaches have to go to where they are since when you cook you’re alerting them, and if you leave crumbs there is a possibility they might come.

Lastly, if you feel that you can’t control the infestation, remember to call professionals who are at your service and who can solve this problem without you having to worry about it.

How to identify a mouse nest in the home

Mice are a plague that has been around for quite some time; they eat the food we leave unattended or damage many of our belongings. But did you know that they make nests in the home? It happens when we don’t act rapidly.

Mouse nests are more common than you might think, and in this article we explain how to identify them, to find a solution to this pest.

Why do mice nest in houses?

There are people who love mice, who like to see them playing in groups or eating food with their little hands. However, they are no longer lovable when they are not domesticated, and they infest houses.

This is usually the case with the mouse we encounter in houses, which enters the home as it is the most adaptable of all the mice species existing. They are omnivorous animals and therefore everything in your kitchen and the rest of the house is a delicacy to them.

It only takes one entry point for the mouse to enter, and through its developed sense of smell it will notice where all the food is, and if it finds it with a bit of luck, it will enjoy it fully.

Mice have various reasons for nesting, including breeding and sheltering the litter, staying warm, guarding the food and protecting the young from predators and other threats.

When the mice move into a house, the male and female are motivated to build a suitable nest because, like other animals, they do everything in their power to survive, even if it is at our expense.

What are mouse nests made of?

Because they are made for the breeding, the nests must be comfortable enough to house it. They consist of things that the rodents have collected from the house, such as food wrappers, scraps of cloth, newspaper, and pillow stuffing.

Mouse nests are not as neat as bird nests, as they simply take various materials and group them into a ball without any specific order. However, the important thing is that the nest is comfortable so that the breeding can survive.

Another aspect to consider when looking for a nest is that you check the droppings. The size tells you if you have a plague of mice or if your home is infested with rats. Mice droppings are smaller than those of rats, measuring between 3 and 6 mm in length.

The droppings are an important sign, as they indicate the activity of the nest. The presence of an abandoned nest does not imply that mice are living in it.

Where to look for mouse nests

When mice are wild, they live in dense undergrowth, grass or bushes. In contrast, inside a house, mice build their nests in enclosed, warm, quiet spaces, which include the following:

  • A box with a filling represents a cosy place for mouse nests.
  • The mice usually chew on the plasterboard to get into these hidden areas without noise, just like in the cartoons.
  • Holes under floor cabinets.
  • Smelly mouse debris is often seen on fake ceiling tiles, and if the rodent pests are frequent, they will eventually saturate and deteriorate them.
  • Mice like to invade refrigerator engine compartments and holes in other appliances, biting into wiring and causing damage that leads to expensive repairs.
  • Hidden and underused areas in garages are the mice’s favourite nesting places.

Of course, mice like to be near their nest when they find a food source. If you see a mouse in the kitchen, it is very likely that the nest is close by, although this rule has some exceptions.

What do you do if you find a mouse nest?

First, avoid touching the nest with your bare hands, put on gloves and a mask to dismantle it. Place the waste in a bucket if there are mice inside.

As soon as the nest is empty, throw it away or burn it as if it were dangerous waste. Remember to clean all the leftovers and excrements with some disinfectant and thus liquidate the bacteria present in the place.

There are preventive measures that can help you keep mice away. Therefore, make sure that the ideal conditions do not exist for a mouse nest to build up again.

  • Seal your food in airtight containers, keep your kitchen clean. Mice need about 3 grams of food a day, and even smaller amounts of food are enough for them to survive.
  • Periodically clean and check your garage and disused motors to diagnose possible nests.
  • If you have old cardboard boxes, we recommend that you discard them. If you need them to store things, it is preferable to use plastic or metal containers because of their resistance.
  • If you have a wardrobe full of old clothes, you should get rid of them if you do not use them. Seasonal clothes can be stored in a reserved area, given away or reused. Do not leave your clothes within reach of mice, as they are precious objects for them to nest in.
  • Move around your house and check possible entrances such as slots or holes, especially near sockets, pipes and the inside of drawers.

It takes only one mouse to begin create a nest, that’s why infestations can be more severe than they appear. If this situation gets out of hand, hire experts to help you exterminate these pests.
