Bird mites

What are bird mites and how to get rid of them?

Pests can come in many colours, shapes, species, among others. Sometimes we think that it is not possible to get one in our house, but it happens. And not only that, we expect them to be easily seen, or noticed, however there are ones that are just super tiny, and you basically do not know how they got inside.

A good example of what we are talking about are bird mites. Although they are not a proper pest, since they only go on birds, they can get to human homes and that is when they become a problem that you need to solve. Remember that if you do not know how to deal with bird mites it is important to call a professional since they can help you with that as soon as possible in order to avoid a bigger infestation.

What are bird mites?

As a normal pest, they are a type of insect or parasite that usually infects birds like chicken, but sometimes they can find their way to homes and make your life a mess. It is quite difficult to spot them since they are very tiny, just like bedbugs. Some adults can get to 1 mm or less. The easiest way to spot them is when they have fed from a subject since, they turn from their grey and oval body into a reddish colour.

Another thing that you should know about them is that they cannot live without bird blood, but they can be without human blood. They tend to drink bird’s blood in order to complete their life cycle, although they do not live longer than several weeks, and the minimum life expectancy time is 7 days.

Where can they be found?

Bird mites are often seen in different kinds of birds, like pigeons, sparrows, chickens, and not only that, but they tend to live near bird nests. You can find them in places when the temperature is warm, so it is usual for them to come out when it is summer or at the beginning of spring when the cold has not started.

Can they bite humans?

Of course, they can. It is known that their favourite food is bird blood, and they need it to complete their life cycle. Human blood is different since it is not enough for them to survive as it does not have the properties that bird blood has.

Whenever they bite humans, you can get a kind of rash, your skin is going to turn red, and you are going to have certain itching which can turn into a more serious infection if you scratch it for too long and break off your skin.

How is at risk of getting bitten by a bird mite?

Not everyone is at risk of having an infestation of this kind at home. Remember that they are usually infecting birds. The people who are most at risk are farmers since they work with birds all day long, and are in direct contact with the places where birds sleep.

Another population at risk is the one that has birds as pets or bird breeders. Also, zoo workers can be at danger since they work directly with the animals, just as farmers do. Vets are in the same category as they treat animals.

Also, if bird mites have infected a place where furniture is you could get them from second-hand furniture that has been in touch with those animals, or living in an infected place.

Measurements to consider to prevent bird mite infestations

There are multiple things you can do when you want to prevent this. If you are a person at risk, you should read through this and follow the recommendations very thoroughly.

First, you need to wear a protective suit whenever you are going to engage contact with the animals in questions. Not only that, but try to use gloves and dispose them when you finish. Mites will not get on you if you do that, it is the best thing to do.

If you feel that you are at risk of having this kind of infestation then you need to change your bed linen and your clothes washed with hot water in order to kill any animal that has stayed on it, and you do not get a bite. This is also excellent when your house has been ultimately infected.

Measurements to take if you have been infected.

If your home has been infested with bird mites you might have to do some things first. Try to vacuum all your carpets and rugs, but if the infestation is massive, you might as well replace them completely.

You can use different types of insecticide like powder or spray, but remember that they can be harmful for you, your pet and your family. Do not use them if you do not know what they contain or just do not know how to use them, you could even get sick.

Having a heavily infested home can make you remove all the furniture that you have or even destroy them since they can be harmful for other people too.

The best thing to do in any case is to call a pest control service. They can help you set up the best treatment that can eradicate that threat. It is not too dangerous for humans to have them, but it is very annoying, and the bites can turn into a mayor headache if they become infected with bacteria. Just call your favourite operator and set up and appointment, so you or your family can feel safe in your home without these pesky insects.

Signs of cockroach infestation

Having cockroaches in your house is not a pretty sight. People may enter your home and when they see one of those little animals there they are going to think that you are a dirty person and that your house is full of filth since they are associated with that, and you may not what your guests to feel that way.

Once you have seen this pesky animal, the best thing to do is to call pest control for you to get rid of them as soon as possible. They can help you with their guaranteed service, using different techniques to make you feel safe and without that ugly sight.

Before you do that you need to know if your house suffers from a cockroach infestation, so for that, you need to know which are the signs of cockroach infestation which can give you an idea of what you are facing.

Live cockroaches roaming around

One of the most important things when you have an infestation at home is seeing the animal by or in itself. It is common for you to see them at night wandering around where there are leftovers or where the rubbish is since they are always looking for food sources.

Remember that they are good climbers, and they can fly, so finding them in high places can be another thing to look out for. They are nocturnal, so it is easier if you start the search at late hours. Check out places like the rubbish can, dark places like sheds or places where rotten wood is. If you see one of them, then it is one of the signs of cockroach infestation.

Not only you can find them alive, but dead too. It is not uncommon to find them laying dead near a door or in any place around the house, this is also an indicator, although you might find them where egg casings and droppings have been found previously.

Cockroach droppings around the house

Cockroaches are the types of animals that can eat whatever thing they find in their path. Their diet goes from dead skin cells, pet food to human food and rubbish. Due to their voracious appetite, they are eating constantly and at the same time leaving a bunch of their droppings behind for you to find.

What do these droppings resemble to? Well, they look as if it were black pepper specks or coffee grounds. They can be easily seen and found. When you find them in a spot you can be sure that there is an infestation going on, but if you find them in more spaces what you have can be a greater infestation so taking action as soon as possible is recommended.

Wherever you find their droppings you must clean the area as soon as possible in order to prevent more of them coming over, and also remove their food and water supply, so you control their population. You need to check in spaces like the bathroom (inside cabinets), the kitchen (shelves, under the washer and different kitchen utensils) and on floors. These are signs of cockroach infestation.

Egg cases findings

As they eat they multiply. They have an exceptional method to breed that can facilitate your investigation in terms of knowing if you have been infested by these creatures. Their eggs are not normal eggs, as they are inside a big container called oothecae that carries all of them. It depends on the type of cockroach, some of them keep the oothecae attached to their body close to hatching, however, that is not the case for all of them since many leave it in a space so the hatching occurs days later. When the oothecae hatches it is left behind as a case, empty, while the little cockroaches crawl on the floor or the surface they were put.

Some spaces where you can find either an empty or full oothecae are any dark crevices or protected areas that are perfect for their hatching. Also, in different corners of the house, in books and under or behind furniture. They are rarely left on open areas unless it is a serious infestation.

Strong smell around nests

It depends on the type of cockroach, but the smell is always there. When there is a high concentration of these animals you will notice a strange, pungent and musty odour coming from the place where they have nested. In particular this is one of the most telling sings of cockroach infestation.

The cause of this smell is the pheromones that are being secreted by the roaches. Furthermore, they tend to defecate on the places they eat, so it is easy to find them when the smell gets strong, sometimes, dead roaches can contribute to the smell, so make sure that whenever you see one of them you check if there are more nearby.

What to do if you find some of these signs?

First, you need to call a pest control service, so they can assess the risk you have. Every infestation is different, so you need to be certain of what is happening in your house or business. They use and have the best methods for you to be relieved of the hazard that these animals bring to your home since they carry many diseases that can harm your family or even your pets.

If you do not want to hire a professional, then you need to follow different DIY methods that can help you control the population, but they will not eliminate or remove the danger from home. They are not that effective so the best-case scenario would be calling a professional, they are at your service.

Bed Bugs

Signs of bed bugs on mattress

Detecting bedbugs can be challenging, especially for those unfamiliar with this pest. As a result, many people mistake bedbug bites for mosquito bites, delaying proper identification and treatment.

However, with the right knowledge of where to look, identifying bedbugs becomes more manageable, paving the way for effective eradication. Adult bedbugs are readily identifiable with proper search techniques.

Discovering signs of bedbugs in mattresses, sheets, and other areas is crucial for combating infestations effectively. It’s essential to address the root of the problem to exterminate these pests successfully.

Signs of bedbugs on mattresses, sheets, and other furniture

Be aware that bedbugs enter your home undetected through luggage, beds, clothing, used furniture, and other items. Their flat bodies which are as thick as a credit card allow them to enter narrow places such as cracks on head boards, mattress tags and inide spring boxes.

Even if your home is kept clean, bedbugs can still enter because they live only on blood and can live without it for up to six months.

Blood stains on your sheets

Waking up and noticing that your sheets have small bloodstains may be an indication that you have a bedbug infestation in your home. Sometimes people crush these bugs during or after feeding at night.

This can lead to blood splatter on your sheets, duvets, or pillows. If you wake up with bloody specks in your bed, we recommend you contact our expert technicians to diagnose if you are dealing with a bedbug infestation before its to late.

Dark spots on the mattress

If you get dark spots on your sheets or mattress, it is most likely due to bedbugs. They often leave fecal signs on the bedding or wherever they have gathered in large numbers.

So if you’re unlucky enough to touch any of these stains with your hand, they’re likely to leave a foul, unpleasant smell.

The presence of clusters of shells on furniture

The eggshells of the bedbugs emerge as white specks in the shape of a shell. Sometimes they can be spotted and are generated when these insects shed their skin during their growth.

Even if you find the eggshells on your mattress or headboard, you may still be able to get them under furniture or cushions. Bedbugs prefer fabric and wood over metal or plastic.

bed bugs on mattress

White stains on the joints of your furniture

Another sign that you may have a bedbug infestation is the discovery of small white traces in the joints of your furniture or in the holes of your mattress. If you see these signs, it’s important to check all other places for signs of infestation.

Use a torch to check between the headboards and cushions of your furniture, removing the fabric attached to the inside of your furniture whenever necessary.

When buying second-hand furniture

It is common to buy second-hand furniture. However, there is a lot of risk involved in buying furniture of this type, as this is one of the most common ways bedbugs infiltrate the home.

The high prices charged by a professional to remove these parasites from the home may convince you that it is better to buy a new piece of furniture rather than a second-hand one.

Presence of red spots and itching

One of the most obvious signs of a bedbug problem is located on your skin. Bedbug bites are characterized by being red, itchy, and inflamed depending on how the person reacts.

Bedbugs are especially active at night, biting people as they sleep. They feed by pricking the skin and drawing blood for 3-10 minutes to feed and continue their journey.

However, people who have a bedbug infestation in their homes do not always know about it, as many do not have physical reactions to bedbug bites. That’s why it’s crucial that people regularly check for bedbugs in their homes.

How to distinguish Bedbug bites against other insects

Linear pattern bites

Another feature of a bedbug infestation is that you can wake up with a particular bite pattern on your skin. These bites appear as a line, which means you can tell them apart from mosquito and flea bites, which have a different formation.

Moist smell for no reason

The smell of dampness is typical of leaks, but if you don’t have these drawbacks start to worry as this can be a sign of a bedbug infestation, along with all the other signs.

The musty smell is because bedbugs release pheromones that are strong enough when there are too many of them.

Dark spots on the walls

Although it may seem strange to you, bedbugs leave fecal stains on the walls or under the wallpaper. If you can’t find any signs of infestation on your bed or furniture, try looking at the walls.

A history of bedbugs in your neighborhood

One thing you should know to identify bedbugs is that both males and females of this species are much smaller than an apple seed. And because they are so small, it is what makes them pass from one person to another, and from one house to the next without you noticing.

Just by visiting your neighbor’s bedbug-infested house, getting some of their belongings or even going to a hotel room with the same situation, you can bring bedbugs into your home.

Wasps

HOW TO AVOID WASPS AND IDENTIFY A NEST

When the hot days of summer come, they bring with them friends that are not desired by many: the wasps. Those who dislike the idea of sharing space with them, try to kill and crush them, and this, unfortunately, makes everything worse.

Tips to prevent wasp infestation

Check your home for nests

It’s important to check everywhere in your home or garden for signs of a nest, especially in early spring when the mating and nesting season begins. These nests initially are the size of a golf ball or a walnut that’s usually hanging.

Search in garages, lofts, sheds, under roofs, or in hollow walls. You can also spot a nest by following the loud buzzing sound that the colony emits from the inside of a nest.

Make sure rubbish containers are tightly closed

External waste containers are a common place for this insect to make a nest so make sure your lids are tightly closed. Place containers far enough from doors and windows so that a nest can’t be found or attracted to the contents of the container.

What to do if you see them

If you are seeing this insect frequently it could mean a nest is near you, even if you have not confirmed the presence of a nest, it is vital that you close doors and windows to prevent them from entering your property. A sting can be deadly if allergic to it so keeping your children and pets away from them is very important since this insect attacks anything it deems a threat to its survival. Unlike bees, they  do not die after stinging which means they will keep stinging until the intruder leaves their territory

Wear dissuasive clothing

You should know that brightly colored or floral-printed clothing attracts them because it mimics the appearance of a flower, they can appear more curious than usual searching for nectar. So using neutral colors is key to approaching or passing near them unseen.

Eliminate their food sources

In late spring and early summer, wasps feed and grow larvae with high-protein food so you must set aside any food that is available to them, such as animal scraps and even pet food.

In late summer, they begin to like foods with sweet smells, so they identify and venture to where these are. Therefore, they will continue to search in the same place after the food has been exhausted.

Uses herbs to keep wasps away

Use aromatic odors, such as mint, eucalyptus, or thyme. Plant any of these herbs outside, to repel these pests when they come near your home.

Identifying species of wasps

Sometimes people confuse them with bees. Of course, they have differences that you can recognize in plain sight. Generally, bees have exceptional yellow and black colors all over their bodies, while wasps can be seen in a wide variety of yellow, black, and even red colors since there are 9,000 species in the UK that vary in appearance and behavior, with some being more prevalent than others. Here’s a brief overview of the most common wasp species and how to identify them.

The Yellow Jacket is the most widespread species in the UK and is easily recognizable by its distinctive black and yellow stripes. They typically build paper nests in sheltered locations such as trees, bushes, and roof spaces.

The German Wasp has more defined black markings on its face and abdomen. They construct nests in similar locations to the Yellow Jacket but tend to be more aggressive and persistent in their defense of the nest.

While less common than other species, the European Hornet is the largest species found in the UK. They have distinctive yellow and brown markings and build large, enclosed nests in hollow trees, wall cavities, and roof spaces.

How to deal with a nest

We do not encourage you to check yourself since it could prove harmful if you have indeed found a wasp nest. The best thing to do is contact Huntsman Pest Control for a professional inspection of your property to identify the infested area. If you decide to do it yourself the first thing you should do is check thoroughly in every corner inside and outside where you live. Once you have located it, make sure it’s not a honeycomb, this can be distinguished by the fact that they have hexagons, so it is vital to leave them alone. Wasp nests are made of dead wood, which makes them light brown or grey with some spirals in their texture.

As to where you can usually find them, anywhere that you find a crack or a dark space may be ideal for wasps to build their nest. There are examples of these places, like cracks in a building, and garden sheds, which tend to be their favorites since they are not going to be more protected.

Moreover, you can find them under the ground, where basements are. This can be very troublesome. The deafening sound of buzzing is a sure sign of a nest nearby.  Check every place around the house where darkness fosters, and you will find it.

Dealing with a wasp infestation can be a daunting task, and attempting to remove a wasp nest on your own can pose serious risks. Rats

What does a rat bite look like?

When there is an infestation at home, you have to be cautious with the animals that are around you. One of the most common is mice or rat infestation, which can be pretty hazardous as these animals carry lots of diseases that can affect you and your family.

The way these animals can spread their diseases is by biting the human. Even though most of the rat bites are not always serious injuries, sometimes they can become in a problem when they get infected and give the condition named rat-bite fever.

Why do rats bite?

This question is critical as you need to know why these animals attack and how not to be their target. First, they have a strong sense of survival. They are going to bite or jump when they feel they have been cornered and do not have anywhere else to go. It is a good idea not to put your hand or finger inside one of their cages or whenever you encounter one try to avoid it and wear something that covers your whole body.

What does a rat bite look like?

Rat bites occur in many places or times. They can happen at nighttime or daylight. When you have been bitten by a rat, you can see the little dots as wounds in the place they have bitten you. It is a small puncture but can be painful and bleed as it swells a lot. It can become infected and be filled with pus or give you a particular condition that is related to these injuries that is rat-bite fever.

What are the symptoms of rat-bite fever?

As its name reflects, this disease starts after the bite has taken place. Many other animals like squirrels, cats, mice, among others can cause it, but it is not as common as with rats. You can see how the wound starts getting bigger and a rash starts to appear. Sometimes little bumps can be seen near the bite, or it can be flat without any of these lesions. The bruising may vary in colour, going from red to purple in most of the cases.

Even though it is one bite, there can be two different types of rat-bite fever because of the bacteria that causes it. One of them, the most common type that is seen through North America is the one associated with the streptobacillus moniliformis and the other one that is associated with spirillus minus that is mostly seen in Asia. Both have different symptoms that you have to know if something like this ever happens to you.

Streptobacillary rat-bite fever symptoms

This one is the most common and the one that heals faster. Also, you might feel some of these symptoms from 3 to 10 days. These symptoms are: fever, diarrhoea, skin turns red (rash), pain in your joints among others.

Spirillary rat-bite fever symptoms

These one is trickier than the other as you may seem to be healing but several symptoms may arise from one to three weeks after the bite has taken place. These can be: fever and chills, headache, ulcer at the wound and skin rash as with the streptobacillary, vomiting and sore throat, among others.

How can you treat a rat bite?

If this kind of situation happens to you, you need to act quickly. First, you need to find some soap and clean the wound with warm water and soap, this might help fight bacteria. After you have done that try to dry it using a clean piece of cloth or towel, then apply some ointment on it (an antibiotic ointment is preferred). Finally, cover it using a bandage, so it does not get any dirt.

Remember that having one of these bites can be dangerous, so you need to go to the doctor’s after you have done your best cleaning it. You might only see one bite, but they can turn into serious problems if they become infected.

A tetanus shot is recommended, and you may ask your doctor to give you one, specially if 5 years have passed from you last got one. If you do not remember when was your last shot, then you might get it too. The doctor may prescribe you with some antibiotics in order for an infection not to develop, so you can feel safe. Treating this fast is the best way to avoid other serious diseases such as pneumonia, pericarditis, meningitis, among others. They may be serious and life-threatening, so it is better for you to take care of them.

What is the outlook after a rat bite?

Rats can be friendly and be treated like pets, but remember that they can still be dangerous for you and for your family. Having one in your house, either wanted or not, may carry some serious consequences for the ones involved.

Whenever this issue arises, you may seek professional help right away. However, remember that preventing this happening is the best cure, so if you know that there is a rat infestation at home, do not take the risk and call a pest control service, so they can help you with this issue.

If you did not get help at the beginning of the infection it does not matter, you can be fine by taking some antibiotics that can help fight it, also, remember to follow your doctor’s advice and follow the prescription. Sometimes you may feel the pain in your joints or a slight fever but this is going to fade after a few days so do not worry about that.

Ants

Types of Ants UK

One of the most common insects that you can find around the world are ants. These little insects can be seen in the garden, in your house, under a rock, and many other different places. If you really look at them carefully, you might find out that all of them are different.

One of the most common asumptions about ants is that they are all de same, all are brown ants (or a shade of brown) and they cause the same damage, but no. There are many species of these animals in the UK. We are going to talk about the most important and common ones.

Garden Ant (Lasius Niger)

Across Europe, you can find many animals, and this one seems to be all around the UK too. This type of ant usually can be found in the garden as a colony. They can become huge in numbers having up to 40 000 worker ants, even though it is a rare case as 7000 workers is the normal found in colonies.

One of the characteristics that this type of ant has is that they are friendly in terms of diseases since it does not transmit any health-endangering diseases. They can become into a nuance if their numbers are big enough, nonetheless.

In terms of their size, they are exceedingly small, going from 3 mm to 5 mm in adult ants, even though the queen can be 2 or 3 times bigger than a normal one. It can get to almost 12 mm.

As a pest, they can be seen in kitchens, cupboards and in corners of the kitchen looking for food for them to feed. Furthermore, this type of ant UK has a fascination for rubbish since it can find leftovers there too.

You dog or cat’s waste can also attract them, so you better get rid of it as soon as possible without leaving any trace.

If you do not want this type of pest going around your house, you can call a professional, so they can fumigate and exterminate them.

Pavement Ant (It is also known as Sugar ant)

Their behaviour is a bit different from other ants. They tend to attack them when they are exploring new territories to expand their current population. As they are called pavement ants, most of these fights tend to be in public since they live in those places. It is not an unusual sight seeing dead ants on the floor.

They do not tend to be that big, usually between 2,5 to 4 mm. Some of them might have wings and are able to fly, but these are not workers but alates, being as twice as big. An ant can sting a person but nothing grave will happen, only the hurt of the sting.

During hot times they dig through the pavement sand as they need to provide fresh air for the colony. You can see little holes in the streets where they have dug for making ventilation for the nest.

Black Ants

Even though they seem to be similar to the garden ants, they vary a little. First, this type of ant UK can be found in different parts, such as northern England, Ireland, and in the lowlands too.

Their main distinguishing feature is the fact that their legs are yellowish, being different from garden ants. Furthermore, their size is bigger.

In terms of behaviour, they make their nests in places like rotten trees or under rocks and boulders. Not only that, but they seem to like hedgerows, it is not too rare to see a nest lined with some of these shrubs.

Hairy Wood Ant

Normally, ants get food from different sources like rubbish and leftovers, but these animals are impressive as they are carnivores. Eating certain animals that live near their colonies is a normal part of their diet. They are commonly found in forests spread out in the United Kingdom.

One of their distinctive features is the hair that grows down in the direction of their eyes. Not only that, but they are bigger than common ants. Moreover, their way of living differs as they have not only one queen but many in their colony.

It can be much bigger than normal ones. They can reach almost half a million workers that are established in a dome-shaped nest with an incredible size. One unique characteristic is that they emit a certain odour that they recognize, but when another ant or animal comes into their nest, they know immediately.

Formica Ligniperda (Carpenter ants)

Carpenter ants are all around the UK. This type of ant UK can be found in places where a wooden construction is taking place, not only on the outside but in the inside too. They have a fascination for these places, a thing that is profoundly serious since their nests are established inside buildings, causing structural damage that can compromise it.

To help you identify a carpenter ant you must know that are 6 legged insects and their bodies are black, red or a combination of both colours. Also, their bodies are oval and segmented. Carpenter ants are often slightly bigger than black ants.

If you want to be sure about the presence of carpenter ants in your house look for piles of sawdust and Wood damage.

Their eating habits are fairly similar to the hairy wood ant as they also eat animals, but generally dead insects that can eat fast. Another thing in their diet is honeydew, and nectar that comes from plants. As part of their diet, they eat different types of sugary food like honey and different fruits. These can be dangerous as you might lure them into your house when you do not protect your food and rubbish.

If you do not want them in your house, try to search the premises for dead insects as they are part of these animals’ diet. They are more active at night, so it is good if you do the search at that time since it is easier to find them.

Fire Ant (European)

The sting of Solenopsis invicta, the Red Imported Fire Ant, is well known to many in the southern United States, but immunotherapy is possible.

This particular type of ant in the UK has similarities with other species with the same name, but it is based here. They like living under fallen trees, rocks or boulders and soil that gives them the nutrients they need for survival.

They live in big nests with multiple queens that take care of the workers. Whenever there is a death in the colony, they take them to a safe distance from the nest.

Pharaoh ants

The Pharaoh species is very common worldwide, and the UK is not the exception. This ant lives in polygynous colonies, meaning that there are multiple queens, so the colony can divide itself into smaller colonies. This species is notorious in hospitals and generally, in indoors. Pharaoh ants are light brown, almost transparent coloured.
